she woke up easily and with a smile when she heard her daddy and i singing, ‘happy kindergarten to you’ this morning. i did everything a mama should do to prepare a girl for her first day of school. i took her out for a manicure after church yesterday and we picked out a new dress. we packed her hello kitty lunchbox with her favorite foods and i tucked in a surprise note with stickers for some midday encouragement. we had a talk about respect and manners and how important it is to be a good listener in class. i squeezed her tight and kissed her skin that always has a way of smelling like summer and warm chocolate chip cookies. she asked what would happen if nobody liked her and i reminded her of how it only took me two and a half seconds to fall madly in love with her and so i was sure that wouldn’t be a problem. we walked up to the school door, both of us feeling brave. i saw her grip the straps of her backpack and her worried eyes met mine. i squeezed her hand, you’re going to do great, i said with as much confidence as i could muster. she smiled and she was off.
my girl is ready for kindergarten. her mama, not so much.

this next picture is my favorite, she looks so small. i love being her mom.

little sister didn't want to be left out of the picture taking party and who am i to deny you people of her cuteness?
